A patent for a new type of tamper-resistant screw was granted on December 19, 2025. The design features a unique, specially shaped recessed profile that allows for installation and removal only with BMW-authorized specialized tools; standard tools-such as Phillips screwdrivers or hex keys-are ineffective. The screw head employs a unique geometric shape incompatible with any off-the-shelf tools. Certain versions utilize an internal Torx-style configuration with precisely fine-tuned tooth profiles, creating an anti-theft mechanism unique to each vehicle. Additionally, the design incorporates an innovative reverse-locking principle that causes the screw to self-lock upon installation, further complicating unauthorized removal; attempting to remove the screw with non-specialized tools actually causes it to tighten further.
These screws are primarily used for wheel hub security, as well as on critical engine components (such as variable valve timing systems) and key structural connection points. For vehicle owners, this new patent means that maintenance is restricted to the BMW authorized dealer network, making it inconvenient to change a spare tire independently.
